I tend to think that a combination of checks and balances in necessary to protect students from harmful material in the Internet. An AUP is a great place to start. However, it takes more than having parents sign a piece of paper that releases a teacher and school district from the responsibility of protecting its students. Along with an AUP, my students are given a talk during the first week of school outlining the rules and behavior that is expected in my classroom, the library, and the computer lab. In addition, both the school librarian and technology assistant in our school t give separate presentation to the students outlining Internet safety. In the end, it is important to be vigilant and monitor your student’s use, while incorporating the help of other teachers and specialists in your building.

What are the benefits to integrating techology? The Wikis and Blogs utilized in the classroom facilitate student to student, parent to student, and teacher to student interaction. Made easily accessible through our classroom website, students are given the opportunity to directly analyze and evaluate peer created presentations. Even though I’ve used a great deal of the technology available in our district, I understand that technology development and improvements are never-ending. Technology and devices I’ve never heard of or that have not been invented yet could be used in the near future to aid my student’s development.
